New Product Hits & Misses
With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don’t have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what’s out there!
So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new! SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them. Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:
1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
4. (15 points) Ingredients: What’s in it, how natural is it?
5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?
* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

This product is a HIT! What should you expect from a Caesar dressing that has only 1 gram of fat? Well, if you are looking at traditional brands, not much but Lean On Me Naturally Caesar Salad Dressing is actually very tasty. The true Caesar salad aficionados are probably going to turn up their noses, but the mouth-feel, consistency and flavor are excellent. This product is also gluten-free, just 15 calories per tablespoon and made with molasses and sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Retails for $5.49 DOni Enterprises, Sherman Oaks, CA

This product is a HIT! Everybody wants to be wholegrain and Riceworks, with their Salsa Fresca Rice Crisps are trying to be to do just that, but you better read the label, because even though this product states it is whole grain on the front, 10 chips only delivers 1 gram of dietary fiber. Once you get past that the taste and texture of these chips are excellent. The package also claims the product is wheat and gluten free and celiac friendly, but dont forget that the natural caramel coloring in the ingredients is a red-flag for celiacs. Retails for $2.99 Snack Alliance Inc., Hermiston, OR 866 581 4431

This product is a RISING STAR! As you know, I just love coffee in fact, dont forget to tune in to the TODAY show on Saturday April 25th to see the results of my coffee taste test. So, when Teeccino sent me their Maya herbal coffee, without caffeine, I was worried. This imitation coffee is all organic, made from carob, barley, chicory, ramon nuts and organic coffee flavor. If you are looking for a coffee alternative check this out it has an excellent aroma, color and flavor my only complaint is that it is not as full-bodied as a black coffee drinker would like. This beverage also contains inulin from chicory root which can help balance the good and bad bacteria in your intestine. Retails for $8.99 9.99 Teeccino Caffé Inc., Santa Barbara, CA 800 498 3434

This product is a MISS! What should you do with cranberry syrup? I guess you could put it on pancakes, I guess you could add it to club soda and make your beverage, I guess you could even cook with it I happen to like cranberries but I dont like this product! The first ingredient is sugar, the next is cranberry juice, not cranberries, followed by lemon juice and modified corn starch this tastes like something you would find at an IHop, not in a gourmet store use real cranberries! They are one of the healthiest fruits out there and dont mix them with so much sugar! Retails for $5.00
