New Product Hits & Misses
With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don’t have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what’s out there!
So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new!
SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them.
Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:
1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
4. (15 points) Ingredients: What’s in it, how natural is it?
5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?
* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

This product is a HIT! Probiotics are SO 2008 but that is the good news, because we finally understand the connection between the foods we eat and our overall health. Probiotics balance the good and bad bacteria in the intestine. Evolves Peach Kefir Smoothie tastes great and lists the good bacteria on the label. But remember that 8oz is still 27 grams of sugar and 180 calories so this is not a diet food, but a wellness drink. Retails for $3.69 – $3.99 Mountainside Farms, Roxbury, NY

This product is a HIT! So, I know what youre thinking does the world need another gluten free cookie? Well, the answer in this case is yes! You would not even know that this product is gluten free the ginger tastes great and I love their idea of making your own mini ice cream sandwiches using these cookies. They also get kudos for using organic natural evaporated cane sugar. Each cookie is just 1 gram of fat indulge! Retails for $3.67
Pamelas Products, Inc., Ukiah, CA 707 462 6605

The idea of popped corn tortillas is good but putting Extra Virgin Olive Oil in big letters on the front of the package when it is the last ingredient on the label; after safflower AND sunflower oil is bad! And then there is the taste they can say it is Nacho Cheese but it does not taste nacho or cheesy didnt anyone taste this stuff before they tried to sell it? The nutritional panel shows 0 grams of sugars, yet the product contains evaporated cane juice and maltodextrin and doesnt corn contain sugar naturally? Retails for $1.99 Medora Snacks, LLC, Rockville Centre, NY 877 633 6721

Fiber Power might be the trademark that attracts your attention, but when you read the nutritional info on this granola you will see there is 9 grams of fiber per serving when you consider that Kelloggs Frosted Mini Wheats contains 6 grams it does not seem that much. I really couldnt taste much of the berry blend and the granola was not all that crunchy. It is wheat free, trans fat free and cholesterol free I would just like to see them add some more fiber and make good on the promise. Retails for $5.99 Bakery on Main, Glastonbury, CT 888 533 8118

So here is my problem why would I buy a syrup that states on the label excessive consumption may have a laxative effect? Ok, I have another question why would I buy a syrup that has an overly watery texture? And, oh yeah why would I buy a sugar free syrup that has 15 grams of carbs that are all coming from sugar alcohol? To top it off the taste only has a hint of pecan the vanilla flavor overshadows just about everything. Retails for $4.99 7.99 Blackberry Patch, Thomasville, GA
