New Product Hits & Misses
With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don’t have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what’s out there!
So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new!
SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them.
Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:
1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
4. (15 points) Ingredients: What’s in it, how natural is it?
5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?
* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

This product is a HIT! This is a great idea I like it its very cool! The question for me is it anything more than just a novelty? The grater included in the package is not comfortable to use its hard to control and frankly Im concerned about safety because the rock of salt does take some effort to grind. However, I do like the taste of the salt itself; this Himalayan Salt has a clean and pleasant, mild flavor. Id also like to know how it is supposed to be stored after opening and would love to see it packaged in a different type of re-sealable container, but even with these concerns this would make a fabulous gift for any gastro-sexual you might know! Retails for $16.99/ cube with grater. Sustainable Sourcing, LLC, Great Barrington, MA 413 528 5141

This product is a MISS! This product is having an identity crisis it doesnt know if it wants to be an indulgent snack – or a healthy snack! It is low in fat and it has 100% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C, as well as 25% vitamins A and D, but is so sweet that it tastes just like candy and maybe thats the point, but with the artificial taste and without a hint of yogurt flavor, I am just not sure if its aimed towards kids or adults. On the package Live and Active Cultures are promoted, but if your goal is to get a significant amount of probiotics I would recommend a refrigerated product and head towards the yogurt in the dairy case. Available in other flavors. Retails for $0.89/1.9 oz bag.Welchs, Concord,

If you are looking for the perfect holiday giftthis is not it. While the baloney itself tastes a lot better than regular baloney, its still baloney and that means a 2oz. portion has almost 1500 mg of sodium and 11 g of fat. And, while every kitchen should have a crock, paying almost $40 per pound for baloney is well A Crock of Baloney I guess the point is, no matter how cute and funny a gag name is – Im just not sure its enough to carry an over-priced product. That said the Lebanon Baloney in this crock tastes great its much closer to salami than the tradition bologna. Retails for $17.95 / crock. A Crock of Baloney, Lebanon, PA 717 228 1010

This product is a RISING STAR! Almond milk is a terrific alternative for those people who want to avoid, or are tired of soy beverages. Unlike soy milk the mouth-feel is nice and clean, and not cloying at all. I also like the consistency; its not gray or watery. Both as a beverage and as an ingredient in cooking this product should be in everyones refrigerator as a non-dairy option. Retails for $3.74/ 4 x 8 fl oz cartons. Im not a chili guy and this product doesnt have the typical thick chili consistency it actually surprised me because the pieces of white meat chicken and the chili peppers are a great combo and really have a terrific flavor. This could be the perfect way to recreate the way chili is served in Cincinnati by pouring it over spaghetti! Retails for $3.49 / 20 oz. Hormel Food Sales, LLC, Austin,
