New Product Hits & Misses
With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don’t have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what’s out there!
So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new!
SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them.
Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:
1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
4. (15 points) Ingredients: What’s in it, how natural is it?
5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?
* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

This product is a HIT! You’ve heard the story before. Successful restaurant has special recipe, becomes famous, owners get rich and everyone’s happy. That might be just what happens as a result of the Whole in the Wall restaurant’s Pesto! This is not your typical pesto as they actually add butter to the traditional recipe, which makes it a little sweeter and a little less tangy – which I’m not sure if I like. It masks the flavor of the olive oil a bit too much. But if you love pesto you should try this one – the fresh basil taste is exceptional. Retails for $5.50.
Whole in the Wall Restaurant, Binghamton,
NY 607 7220006
This product is a HIT! Successful brands need to have a personality as well as products that taste great. The first sip of Honest Ade brought me back to drinking bug juice at camp which is a wonderful memory. But that’s where the comparison ends. This product is the total opposite; made with only organic juices, flavor and sugar. This punch only has 7 % juice and is100 calories a bottle. This summer; THIS is THE drink! Retails for $1.49 Honest Tea Inc., Bethesda, MD 800 865 4736
This product is a HIT! Baking cookies in our office always attracts a crowd of neighbors and these Better Bakes were no exception – the aroma is intoxicating. The recipe is extraordinary – made without trans fats and the outsides were crispy and the insides chewy. Who says you can’t make good products without using artificial anything? I just wish they came in a re-closeable bag because baking 24 at a time is more than the average person would probably do. Retails for $4.99 Immaculate Baking Co, Flat Rock, NC 888 82MOJOS
This product is a HIT! Looks like I will be tasting a lot of salsas this year. here’s another new one from Wholly Salsa. It comes in a peel and serve tray and is found in the refrigerated case. There’s no added sugar, it is all natural and the hot flavor has a nice clean burn. The only thing I don’t like about the product is that it is made in Mexico for a US company – with so many great tomatoes in California and New Jersey – what is up with that? Retails for $3.69 – $3.99 Fresherized Food, a division of Avomex, Inc., Fort Worth, TX 817 509 0626
The health claim on the front of the label is “saturated fat free” and although there is a tiny bit of natural fat in figs, I hate it when products go for the cheap shot – especially when the product can easily stand on its own. This fig preserve is tasty; a little too sweet though (which is not surprising as the first ingredient is honey, then figs and then sugar). Overall it is very good – the only thing to be careful of are the seeds which can get caught in your teeth! Retails for $5.99 Simmie Js Barbecue Sauce, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 909 899-2413
