Consuming Kids part 2 of 7
October 13th, 2010 | by admin |
Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children’s marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids.

this video acts …
this video acts shocking..as though the majority of people even care or want to do anything about it.. we wont even make all citizens equal..let alone attack the corporations that are in bed with the government.

@deadpisser88 LOL . …
@deadpisser88 LOL … yeah, well, ok. if you say so. But may I ask, have you ever been directly involved in any newsworthy item covered by either of these entertainments so as to actually gage how ‘genuine’ they really are? Over my years, I have, but I’m asking if you have. And you STILL think they are ‘genuine’?

@teledyn NOVA and …
@teledyn NOVA and 60 Minutes. Two shows that no doubt would go over the heads of children, but are nonetheless informative.

@teledyn I will ask …
@teledyn I will ask. I won’t lie that generally a good number of commercials have led me to do what they wanted me to do in the first place, but I’m older now. I can easily choose between what I want and don’t want to watch. Not everything the television shows is trash. Kids (and adults) just happened to be more interested with stupid shit. Being able to decide which program is bettered suited to expand the kids mind is a tad better than just shutting it off. They miss out on genuine info.

@revolversmoke You …
@revolversmoke You CAN control it. Simply turn off the television. Children especially should not be using cell phones because the energy that radiates from the phones is much more damaging to them than to adults (it is very bad for them though). We are going to see massive numbers of brain tumors because of cell phones.

It goes back to …
It goes back to personal responsibility. We MUST be the adults in our children’s lives and protect them from these unscrupulous filth. We could pretty much accomplish this by merely turning off the boob tubes. Mission mostly accomplished.

I’m a 13 year old watching this for school and now I realize how scary this advertising world is. I wish that they could control this.

That is 100% truth. If everyone threw out their propaganda box than we wouldn’t have to worry about “deregulation”

@Heavymetalgamer28 …
@Heavymetalgamer28 Liberal morons? I am pretty sure the most abuse that goes on is on the hands of the corporations. The government NEEDS to protect the people from corporations, but they don’t, because of conservative morons and their deregulation. I am not so worried about rights being taken away as I am of our food and environment being destroyed by republican greed like it has been for many, many years. Republican and Democrats are from the same evil pool of people.

@redgenealogy
Exactly, the problem with the government is how big it is, that means it can abuse the people more, which it is totally doing. The government does not give a about the people and a big part of why is because it’s so big, these liberal morons don’t get that big government will NOT benefit the people.

@Heavymetalgamer28 …
@Heavymetalgamer28 AGREED! The more the government gets involved the more dependent we as a country become. We are responsible for our own lives and our children’s lives, not the government. If people keep handing power over the the government instead of taking responsibility for themselves, the more we become enslaved. I’m in the process of changing our lives around and it’s not easy but I definitely sleep better at night!!!

@Psycolynch I …
@Psycolynch I design advertisements for a restaurant. We advertise at high schools all over the city and hand out gift certificates to “the football player of the week”. We also take their pictures and post them at our restaurant. The kids bring their families to enjoy their recognition and also to enjoy the sports atmosphere (also targeted at kids). I must admit to a sense of shame when the restaurant owner refused to disclose to nutritional value of the food.

I don’t know if …
I don’t know if marketing to children is all bad in the case of toys… some one had a job when they had to make the movies, cartoons, toys.
In the case of junk/fast food, I agree with the film because the bad food contributes to terrible health.

In all fairness, …
In all fairness, the spongebob macaroni, at most the shaped ones, cheese does taste different from the standard macaroni noodles cheese…. never looked into why though…. it maybe has to do with how the cheese tasted in consequence to the different noodles being used. But it does taste different.

Regulation of TV is not the answer
Turning it off is.
Don’t even think about regulating TV, that’s not necessary. What is is to turn it off and free your mind.

@baigandine where the heck do you work ? seriously ? where you think the money comes from anyway ? if the kids didnt spend it, the parents would probably anyway, one way or another – but selling more toys doesnt mean the economy is healthier …

The info is good …
The info is good and very informative. However, as a 17 year old who grew up with tons of advertising, I don’t yet see the huge problem with this. I’m not a blind consumer, who sticks to brands just based on name. Rather I think this is a case of old people complaining about kids living different lives than they did.

Yeah let’s regulate the out of youth marketing. That’ll put a stop to it, just like drug bans put a stop to all that teen marijuana consumption
